Did you know that there are over 3 million cases of skin cancer diagnosed in the United States each year? With many of those cases located in the southern part of the country (there’s a link between latitude and skin cancer), it’s more important than ever for people in the greater Atlanta area to schedule regular skin cancer screenings.

But exactly how often should you undergo a skin cancer screening?

In general, it’s recommended that you undergo an annual skin cancer screening from your physician or a dermatologist. A medical professional can examine any moles, markings, or any other skin abnormalities that may be indicative of skin cancer. What’s more, a medical professional can measure and track moles and freckles on the skin throughout the years. That way, if anything changes, you can get the immediate treatment you need to remain healthy.

You don’t have to wait for your annual skin cancer screening to take charge of your health. If you want to get started, it’s recommended that you check your own skin every three months. Make note of any freckles, moles, or anything else that stands out from your skin. Have a loved one examine the skin you can’t see (like behind the neck, back, and backs of legs). Keep examining these skin abnormalities; if you notice any of the following, make an immediate appointment with your dermatologist:
