About This Service

IPL2-Service

How does it work?

IPL operates using the principle of selective photothermolysis, in which the wavelengths of light heats and destroys the tissue targeted for treatment, without damaging the surrounding tissue. The machine is equipped with filters that adjust the range of wavelengths to suit different treatments and skin types.

How many treatments do you need?

A series of 2-4 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart, is usually recommended to clear skin discolorations and vascular lesions. Each session lasts for 30-40 minutes.

What should you expect?

There is virtually no downtime after our IPL treatment so you can return to regular activities immediately afterward.

Prior to treatment:

  • Do NOT tan the areas to be treated for 4 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Avoid using self-tanning products for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Shave the areas prior to treatment.
  • Use of the medication Accutane (isotretinoin) within 6 months of treatment is forbidden.
  • Stop Retin-A, Retinol, Glycolic, and AHA products 2-3 days prior to treatment.
  • Let us know if you have a history of fever blisters if you are undergoing treatment on your face.

Post treatment care:

  • Quick, warm showers are recommended. If areas are treated other than the facial area, hot baths are not advised for 24 hours.
  • If the skin is broken or a blister appears, apply Aquaphor or Polysporin ointment and call the office. The area should be kept lubricated to prevent crusting or scabbing.
  • Cold packs, Aloe-Vera or any other cooling preparation may be used to ease temporary discomfort.
  • Prolonged sun exposure is to be avoided for 4 weeks before and after treatment. In addition, a broad-spectrum sunblock/sunscreen should be applied daily and reapplied often.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are IPL Skin Treatments?

IPL is a non-ablative, non-invasive procedure that uses controlled light in specific wavelengths to restore the texture your skin had before exposure to the sun and other environmentally damaging factors.

What are the advantages of IPL for age spot treatment?

IPL is gentle and safe, and it effectively treats multiple symptoms and locations in each session. It is an in-office procedure, and virtually no downtime is required. IPL is a remarkably quick way to rejuvenate your complexion by removing the spots, discolorations, and unwanted pigment. Additionally, IPL can be customized to individual skin types and conditions.

Who is an IPL candidate?

Anyone with skin types 1-3 that are showing signs of skin damage caused by aging, sun exposure or other environmental factors.

What is IPL treatment like?

A cold gel is applied to the treatment area, and patients are given protective eyewear. During treatment, the smooth glass surface of the IPL handpiece is gently applied to the skin, and precise pulses of light penetrate the area being treated. The pain level is very minimal and can be further reduced by application of a topical anesthetic and/or cold air. Most patients experience a small stinging sensation. Procedures last about 10-30 minutes.

What will I look like immediately after IPL?

There may be a slight redness or blotchiness to the skin. This usually disappears after an hour. Age spots may darken soon after IPL treatments as a result of the light interacting with the pigment in your age spots, and may fade or flake off following your treatment. Other than that, there will be no outward signs of trauma to your skin.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

The goal of this procedure is to provide maximum benefit with minimal trauma and risk to the skin. Several treatments ensure gradual, natural-looking improvement. A complete program usually includes 2-6 sessions at approximately 3-4-week intervals. Maintenance treatments may be needed.
