About This Service

Kybella® is a prescription solution for the treatment of submental fat, the fat below the chin. It is FDA-cleared for use in adults 18 years of age and older. There is less pain and downtime associated with Kybella when compared to traditional surgical options.

Excess fat below the chin, often referred to as a "double chin," is a common problem. Surgical solutions such as liposuction have traditionally been used to get rid of this fatty tissue, but a noninvasive treatment called Kybella is another option. It is the ideal solution for people with moderate to severe fullness beneath the chin.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a substance the body produces to assist with the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella is injected into the fatty tissue beneath the chin, and it destroys the membranes of the fat cells.

Pre-procedure instructions

If you have not been prescribed aspirin or other blood thinners by your physician for the treatment of a known cardiovascular disease, avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as Advil or Motrin for five to seven days prior to the procedure, as these medications increase bleeding and bruising.

  • Avoid vitamin E, fish oil, Ginkgo biloba, St. John's Wort, ginseng and garlic for five to seven days prior to the procedure. These medications and herbs can increase bleeding and bruising.
  • Arnica, a natural supplement (found at any health food store) can be taken for three to four days prior to treatment to help minimize bruising and swelling. We recommend taking tablets orally, but there is also a topical form available.
  • Avoid alcohol two days prior to the procedure. Alcohol may cause blood vessels to dilate and cause more bruising.
  • Tylenol may be taken 45 minutes prior to your treatment to help minimize discomfort.
  • Do not schedule this procedure within four (4) weeks of a previous procedure or prior to a big event.
  • Kybella cannot be injected if you are or may be pregnant or if you are breastfeeding.

Post-procedure instructions (24-48 hours after treatment)

  • Avoid rubbing, massaging or scrubbing the injection site.
  • Avoid vitamin E, fish oil, Ginkgo biloba, St. John's Wort, ginseng and garlic. These medications and herbs can increase bleeding and bruising.

  • Arnica, a natural supplement (found at any health food store) can be taken to help minimize bruising and swelling. We recommend taking tablets orally, but there is also a topical form available.
  • You may apply make-up after the procedure to cover bruising.
